CMU SSQ Interviews The Saturdays

Right, here come the all important facts, people. Consisting of Frankie Sandford and Rochelle Wiseman – formerly of S Club 8 formerly S Club Juniors – along with Mollie King, Una Healy and Vanessa White, The Saturdays released their debut single ‘If This Is Love’ in July 2008. Their debut album ‘Chasing Lights’ duly followed in October, peaking at number nine in the good old music charts, exactly the same position reached by their second album, ‘Wordshaker’, which was released exactly a year later. I reckon there’s some voodoo at play. This week the girl group release new single ‘Missing You’, the opening track from their new mini-album ‘Headlines’, which follows on 16 Aug. Knowing just how many fans The Saturdays have among the CMU faithful, we stalked Vanessa for a whole week until we persuaded her to answer our Same Six Questions.

Q1 How did you start out making music?
When we first got together we were in the studio loads. We had lots and lots of tracks and worked with a writer called Ina Wroldsen, who worked with us for most of the first album. We took it from there really, and just carried on.

Q2 What inspired your latest album?
There are loads of tracks on it that we like, and which we enjoyed writing and recording. We had a bit of a break at the beginning of the year, but wanted to get these songs out in 2010, before we start work on our next full album. So that’s where the idea of a mini-album came from. We haven’t really changed in the direction that we’ve been going down from the very beginning. It’s nothing too different from the albums before it’s just a more updated version I’d say.

Q3 What process do you go through in creating a track?
We all sit in a room together, whether it’s three of us, or two of us, and we sit there and think about what we want to write about. And just chat and feed off each other really.

Q4 Which artists influence your work?
Really cool pop tracks. Acts like us, straight up pop!

Q5 What would you say to someone experiencing your music for the first time?
I’d say it’s fun pop!

Q6 What are your ambitions for your latest album, and for the future?
We want it to do well, obviously. We really like it, so we just hope everyone else does! Obviously, after this, we’ve got the more singles coming out from the album, plus we’ve got a book and a jewellery range, so it’s all going on! We definitely want to do more albums and keep developing our sound and style into the future.

Digitalspy Interview: Mollie

We’ll be honest with you – we were a little concerned when everything went quiet in the Saturdays camp post-‘Ego’, but with Girls Aloud on shaky ground and Sugababes M.I.A., we’re pleased to see Frankie, Mollie, Rochelle, Una and Vanessa picking up the slack. Back with the stomping electropop ballad ‘Missing You’ and mini-album Headlines!, the girls are firmly positioning themselves to pinch the crown for ‘Britain’s Top Girlband’. But first, can they score that elusive No.1 hit? We gave Mollie a call to find out if they’re feeling confident.

Are you enjoying performing the new single?
“I love this single and I love the dance routine! You know what we’re like – even though it’s a ballad we still wanted to have a dance. Thankfully it’s got a trancey beat which lends itself to a bit of a routine. We actually performed the track’s club remix on Alan Carr’s show the other day.”

Does that mean you have to do the routine faster?
“It does! It’s already quite complicated so that was… interesting! So much fun though.”

What’s the response to the single been like?
“We’re really pleased with the response it’s had. Whenever we put a single out, we get a sense in the first couple of weeks how people are responding to it, and this seems to be the best yet. The radio stations are loving it and the fans seem to be as well. It’s sort of a new direction for us, but not so much as to alienate our fans. I can’t wait for everyone to hear the album.”

Talking Shop: The Saturdays

With The Sugababes missing in action and Girls Aloud on indefinite hiatus, The Saturdays, by default, have become Britain’s top girl band.

Since 2008, the five-piece have scored seven top 10 hits, and are aiming for an eighth with new single Missing You.

The song, which borrows JLS’s “raveballad” template, precedes a mini-album later this month.

According to their record label, the CD will “act as a bridge” between last year’s Wordshaker and a full album in 2011.

Singer Vanessa White explains the concept to the BBC – and recounts the band’s horrible history of leg injuries.

Your last album only came out in October. How did you get another one ready so soon?

To be honest, we took a break at the beginning of the year and within that time, we went to the studio loads and did some really, really cool stuff.

We weren’t really supposed to be releasing anything til next year but we couldn’t wait, so we decided to do a mini-album instead.

What exactly is a mini-album?

A normal album would maybe consist of 12 or 13 tracks, but here we have eight. It’ll be cheaper for the fans – and then hopefully we’ll finish the other songs and put something else out later.

Missing You is quite a departure from your normal style. Why is that?

If you listened to the album, you’d say it was an updated version of our sound. Missing You is more out-there than that rest of it. It’s fun to experiment.
