Night Fever Saturdays

Girls get in shape ahead of their Scottish tour dates

The Saturdays are out to get themselves in even better shape as they prepare for their T in the Park and Glasgow Clyde Auditorium dates.

Una Healy, Frankie Sandford, Rochelle Wiseman, Mollie King and Vanessa White are getting physical with celebrity trainer Mark Roberts – who has worked with the likes of Madonna, John Galliano and Naomi Campbell.

Catching up with the girls as they flew to Glasgow for an appearance at last night’s Young Scot awards, Una admitted: “We’ve been working with Mark to get into shape for the tour.

“We are really getting our fitness levels up. Mark was doing my body fat and telling me that Naomi was 19 per cent body fat. I am 20.5 per cent so I’m not too far behind her. We’ve been going in to the gym then doing a full day’s dance rehearsal afterwards.

“You feel bad at first because all the aches kick in, but after time you feel the benefits, you are more toned and have more energy.” The girls, who reached No.2 with their version of Depeche Mode’s Just Can’t Get Enough for Comic Relief, recently switched their Glasgow show from June 8 to June 2 in order to fit in new shows to their tour.

“We always love travelling up to Scotland,” Una said. “It’s nice to fly this time because sometimes we have to drive and it is quite a long way. Because it is the Easter weekend, we want to get back and spend time with our families.

“Then we’ll be back for the Glasgow show.We have added dates because the tour is selling so well.

“We haven’t started rehearsing yet, but we want to put on a really great show for everyone. We’re having meetings and will start rehearsals in May.” Meanwhile, Una, 27, says she’ll be ready for T in the Park, come rain or shine, and she is hoping her boyfriend, rugby union player Ben Foden, can join her at Balado.

She said: “I’m sure all the boyfriends will be popping along to whatever gigs they can. Hopefully, Ben can come to T in the Park. I don’t know a lot about the festival, but I am looking forward to us playing there as well asV Festival in England and Oxegen in Ireland the same weekend.

“I’ll be getting my wellies out for the festivals because I have had an experience with no wellies and it wasn’t nice.

“Also, I went to Oxegen four years ago and got sunburned so I had to go home at lunchtime and missed all the acts.” And The Saturdays are fully aware that indie stars such as Kings Of Leon, The Killers and Snow Patrol may be doing double takes as they wander backstage at Scotland’s top music festival.

Una said: “They’ll probably look at us and wonder what a pop band are doing there. But the way festivals are now, there is a tent for dance, a tent for indie and rock and a tent for pop.

“The festivals cater for everyone now. If it was all one type of music, you would get bored.

“A lot of fans of indie have a soft spot for pop. A lot of my friends back home love our stuff as well as Kings Of Leon. Pop is good for the soul and party nights out.

When I was young, I loved pop because I loved to see what groups like The Spice Girls were wearing. We love dressing up, too and make-up.” “We did the full tour last summer with Girls Aloud, so that gave us good preparation for our own tour. They have had massive success and we hope to enjoy that level of success one day.”

Escala ‘want Saturdays collaboration’

Tuesday, March 31 2009, 14:32 BST
By David Balls, Entertainment Reporter

Escala have revealed that they are desperate to record with The Saturdays.

The two groups have not all met but share a connection through boyband McFly. Escala violinist Izzy Johnston dates drummer Harry Judd, while Saturdays singer Frankie Sandford is in a relationship with Dougie Poynter.

“It would be great if Escala and The Saturdays could meet up someday. We would love to collaborate with them,” Johnston told the Daily Record.

“Since I met Frankie, The Saturdays have grown quickly as a band. I’m a big fan and we were gutted when they didn’t get No.1 with their Comic Relief single.”

“We love The Saturdays. Their last single ‘Issues‘ was fantastic and their video for ‘Just Can’t Get Enough‘ was great,” Tasya Hodges added.

“Their styling is really good, too. They wear great dresses and always look so fresh. They also have great voices.”

Escala release their self-titled debut album on May 25, which includes covers of Snow Patrol’s ‘Run’ and Robert Miles’s ‘Children’.

They’re with the band: The Saturdays recreate Robert Palmer’s iconic 80s video look

They’re with the band: The Saturdays recreate Robert Palmer’s iconic 80s video look

By Daily Mail Reporter
02nd April 2009

Girl group The Saturdays have hurtled back to the Eighties for a seductive tribute to Robert Palmer.

In thigh-skimming skirts and killer heels, the quintet strike sultry poses in a photo shoot for their take on the iconic Addicted to Love video.

And while their own act is more about singing and dancing than playing actual instruments, they certainly look arresting with the white guitars slung around their necks.

The girls recreated the look to launch Virgin Media’s Addict PAYG tariff.

The original 1985 music video has spawned several parodies, including Beyonce’s Green Light, Mr Blobby’s music video and Shania Twain’s Man! I Feel Like a Woman, in which the sexy models were replaced by men.

Robert Palmer’s hit was also notable for being the first and last clip to be broadcast on long-running UK music programme The Chart Show.

When it was shot, a musician was hired to teach the models basic guitar techniques, but gave up after an hour when it proved too hard

The choreography was also less than smooth, and the women can be seen moving out of sync with one another and even dancing to sections with no backbeat.

The Saturdays are going from strength to strength, and plan to add another string to their bow when they launch their own fashion range.

They are yet to score a coveted number one hit, however, as their Red Nose Day single Just Can’t Get Enough was beaten to the top spot by Flo Rider’s Right Round.

Group member Vanessa White, 19, said: ‘It was gutting because halfway through the mid-week sales we were in front. It was our highest position yet, so hopefully the first single off our next album will go to No. 1.
